An all-electric single-molecule motor.
Many types of molecular motors have been proposed and synthesized in recent years, displaying different kinds of motion, and fueled by different driving forces such as light, heat, or chemical reactions. We propose a new type of molecular motor based on electric field actuation and electric current detection of the rotational motion of a molecular dipole embedded in a three-terminal single-mole...
متن کاملAn electric field induced reversible single-molecule fluorescence switch.
We report that by applying an electric field to a single squaraine-derived rotaxane (SR) molecule on bare glass, the fluorescence can be completely quenched. The molecule undergoes a reversible fluorescence switch between a zero-field "on" state and a high-field "off" state, which is attributed to intramolecular electron transfer within the SR molecule.
متن کاملSingle-molecule identification via electric current noise
Label-free and real-time single-molecule detection may aid the development of high-throughput biosensing platforms. Molecular fluctuations are a source of noise that often hinders single-molecule identification by obscuring the fine details of molecular identity. In this study, we report molecular identification through direct observation of quantum-fluctuation-induced inelastic noise in single...
متن کاملElectric field breakdown in single molecule junctions.
Here we study the stability and rupture of molecular junctions under high voltage bias at the single molecule/single bond level using the scanning tunneling microscope-based break-junction technique. We synthesize carbon-, silicon-, and germanium-based molecular wires terminated by aurophilic linker groups and study how the molecular backbone and linker group affect the probability of voltage-i...
متن کاملSingle-molecule Spectroscopy of Motor Proteins
44 single-molecule spectroscopy of motor proteins 2.2.1 Abstract Single-molecule fluorescence spectroscopy has become a crucial tool to study the behavior of biomolecules and their roles in complex biological processes. Single-molecule methods have in particular contributed to our understanding of the mechanism of force generation and motility of motor proteins. Motor proteins are enzymes that ...
